Principal's Message

Hello Balwin Family and welcome to this amazing learning community!

At Balwin School, we focus on high quality education to support the needs of all students, and we are very fortunate to have exceptional staff that create meaningful and enriching learning opportunities. We are excited for this school year and the possibilities it brings. We are rich in diversity and that richness is our strength.

In 2023-2024, we introduced the new anchor words that guided our conversations, support and expectations for everyone in the Balwin Family: Capable, Confident, and Connected. In 2024-2025 we will continue to use these words.

Balwin and the Division's Strategic Plan:

Priority #1

  • Build on outstanding learning opportunities for all students

Capable, Confident, and Connected Students: Balwin school provides an excellent start to learning and success for every student. This foundation is critical for success beyond school.

Priority #2

  • Advance action towards anti-racism and reconciliation

Capable, Confident, and Connected Students: The Balwin community is characterized by a richly diverse population.  This diversity creates vibrancy and opportunities to meaningfully engage all learners, thus ensuring they have lives of opportunity, dignity and fulfillment. There is a strong desire to engage families and the community at large to provide guidance and wisdom for our journey in anti-racism and toward reconciliation.  At Balwin, our school community continues to ensure all students and staff are seen, valued and understood.  All members are acknowledged, know that they belong, and have a voice in their experience in helping to build our school community.

Priority #3

  • Promote a comprehensive approach to student and staff well-being and mental health

Capable, Confident, and Connected Students: With a wealth of partnerships, Balwin is able to assist our school community with supporting the whole child in a manner that supports families and promotes public education.

  • The Family Centre (Roots & Wings worker)
  • E4C (lunch program)
  • The Edmonton Food Bank (breakfast program)
  • Edmonton Immigrant Settlement Association (EISA)
  • Chimo Animal Assisted Wellness and Learning Society (CHIMO)
  • Big Brothers and Big Sisters (student mentoring)
  • Argyll School (Reach Out program)
  • University of Alberta (student tutors)
  • Free Play (after school sports program)

Balwin continues to develop opportunities for students to contribute to the school community by leadership programs and activities, thus increasing engagement, belonging and well being.

I look forward to the year ahead. Please know I am available to meet and discuss concerns and questions.  I am committed to ensuring your child experiences a vibrant learning community and has opportunities in which to meaningfully engage, thus ensuring they have lives of opportunity, dignity and fulfillment.

Balwin Student Land Acknowledgement

Balwin Students worked on a Land Acknowledgment Project which is displayed in our atrium. As a part 2 of this project a representation of students from Division 1,2, and 3 recorded some of their reflections, creating this beautiful and unique Balwin School Land Acknowledgment. Enjoy.
