Principal's Message

Hello Balwin Family! I am honoured to be part of this amazing learning community.  Balwin School is a destination school built on the strength of a diverse school community, focusing on teaching and learning rigour, ensuring relevance for learning is paramount in a place where quality relationships are a priority. These priorities are framed in an environment that nurtures comprehensive intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth for all. Our work is driven through the Division's strategic plan.

Priority #1

  • Build on outstanding learning opportunities for all students

Balwin school provides an excellent start to learning and success for every student. This foundation is critical for success beyond school.

Priority #2

  • Advance action towards anti-racism and reconciliation

The Balwin community is characterized by a richly diverse population.  This diversity creates vibrancy and opportunities to meaningfully engage all learners, thus ensuring they have lives of opportunity, dignity and fulfillment. There is a strong desire to engage families and the community at large to provide guidance and wisdom for our journey in anti-racism and toward reconciliation.  At Balwin, our school community continues to ensure all students and staff are seen, valued and understood.  All members are acknowledged, know that they belong, and have a voice in their experience in helping to build central to our school community.

Priority #3

  • Promote a comprehensive approach to student and staff well-being and mental health

With the wealth of partnerships Balwin is able to assist our school community with supporting the whole child in a manner that supports families and promotes public education. Balwin  will maintain its partnerships with The Family Centre (Success Coach and Roots & Wings worker), E4C (lunch program), The Edmonton Food Bank (breakfast program), Big Brothers and Big Sisters (student mentoring), Argyll School (Reach Out program), University of Alberta (student tutors) and Free Play (after school sports program).   Balwin will continue to develop opportunities for students to contribute to the school community by leadership programs and activities, thus increasing engagement, belonging and well being.

I look forward to the year ahead. Please know I am available to meet and discuss concerns and questions.  I am committed to ensuring your child experiences a vibrant learning community and has opportunities to meaningfully engage, thus ensuring they have lives of opportunity, dignity and fulfillment.
