Principal's Message

Balwin School is a learning community which is committed to the success of each student. Our dedicated teachers and other staff work closely with our students in bringing a quality educational experience to every student in order to meet the needs of our diverse student population. We strive to be a centre for excellence around language and literacy learning, which challenges students to cultivate their academic potential while demonstrating distinction in citizenship, leadership, problem solving, respect and responsibility. Most importantly, we set these high standards and expectations within a caring environment for all of our students.

Our students are becoming our community’s future leaders. As such it is essential that they develop competencies as:

  • Engaged Thinkers: who think critically and make discoveries; who use technology to learn, innovate, communicate, and discover; who works with multiple perspectives and disciplines to identify problems and find the best solutions; who communicate these ideas to others; and who, as a life-long learners, adaps to change with an attitude of optimism and hope for the future.
  • Ethical Citizens: who build relationships based on humility, fairness and open-mindedness; who demonstrate respect, empathy and compassion; and who through teamwork, collaboration and communication contribute fully to the betterment of community and the world.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: who create opportunities and achieve goals through hard work, perseverance, resilence, and discipline; who strive for excellence and earn success; who explore ideas and challenge the status quo; who are competitive, adaptable and resilient; and who have the confidence to take risks and make bold decisions in the face of adversity.

For more information on 21st Century skills click here.

The student is at the centre of all decisions and discussions related to curriculum. He or she is the driver of their own learning. Our students are asked to be involved in a great deal more than their classes. They are expected to become active contributors to their school and their community. Students participate in leadership, school improvement, volunteerism and mentoring in order to learn the skills of active citizenship in the 21st Century.

Parents are valued partners in our educational team and are encouraged to visit the school, consult with the staff and participate in school functions. We encourage each member of our educational team to work together to provide the highest quality educational program possible. I am proud to say Balwin School is a positive place where everyone learns and succeeds.
