Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers

Balwin School is proud of it's ethnically diverse school population and we work hard to support and welcome new immigrant families to our school community.

Through our partnership with the Edmonton Mennonite centre for Newcomers were are able to provide a variety of extra supports to our new families.

EMCN's Settlement Services in Schools provides support with education and settlement-related issues to newly immigrated families and their children at Balwin School. This cultivates greater communication and establishes meaningful connections between newly immigrated families, their community and school.

In addition, English as an Additional Language Teachers and Settlement Practitioners organize homework clubs to provide academic support to students after school.

Family Centre

Balwin School has partnered with The Family Centre to support our families and children.

The Family Centre brings Success Coaches and Aboriginal Commitment Coaches into our school. They are a valuable resource to help support children and youth who are at risk of having unsuccessful school experiences.

Coaches help children and youth become positively engaged with their school, resulting in them attending school, succeeding academically, reducing high risk behaviour, increasing internal and external resources, developing positive goals and to begin to see themselves as having the potential for future success.

The Family Centre also provides Family Therapy to our families who are in crisis or need counseling support.
